Douglas Rain, the voice of HAL, the computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey and the lesser known 2010:Odyssey 2 has passed away aged 90 from natural causes. More details are at the ABC News website.
2001: A Space Odyssey, written by Arthur C Clarke and directed by the great Stanley Kubrick was and is THE definitive “space movie” that went up and beyond – into infinity if you will – its original concept, a short story by Clarke called The Sentinel.
I have lost track of the number of times I have watched this film from its initial launch in the late 60s – and it still stands up today despite the lack of CGI and other taken-for-granted-today effects.
In fact, at a re-launch of the original movie in the 90s, the marketing tag line was “Before Star Wars, there was, is and always will be, 2001: A Space Odyssey”
Whether you like science fiction, a great story, superb cinematography, brilliant direction or are a student of cinema, then you should watch it.
Hell, just watch it.
