Canon announces development of the EOS R5 and new RF series lenses plus M200

Canon Inc. has announced that the company is currently developing the EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera—containing CMOS sensor, image processing, optical and other state-of-the-art technologies the company has cultivated through its long history of camera development. What’s more, during 2020, Canon plans to release a total of 9 RF lenses currently in development. Through the addition of competitive cameras and lenses to its line up, Canon will continue to strengthen the EOS R System.

The EOS R System enables: greater freedom in lens design thanks to a wider lens mount diameter; and, short back focus and high-speed system for transmitting data between the camera and lens, resulting in an imaging system that delivers higher image quality and greater ease-of-usei.

The new full-frame mirrorless camera currently under development will fully leverage the advantages of the EOS R System to realise high-speed continuous shooting and 8K video recording and expanding the boundaries of visual expression. In addition, it can contribute to more efficient workflows thanks to improved transmission functionality, operability and reliability. These enhancements and more will help the new camera elevate the EOS Series concept of “Speed, Comfort and High-image-quality” to a higher level.

Canon’s EOS R5, the first of the next-generation full-frame mirrorless cameras in the company’s EOS R System, will include a newly developed CMOS sensor that makes possible such advanced features as high-speed continuous shooting—up to approximately 20 frames per second (FPS) using an electronic shutter and up to approximately 12 FPS using a mechanical shutter—to facilitate shooting of athletes at sporting events and other fast-moving subjects. In addition, the camera’s 8K video capture capability will enable users to extract high-resolution still images from video footage as well as process 8K video into higher-quality 4K video, opening up new possibilities for visual expression. What’s more, the EOS R5 will be the first Canon camera equipped with a high-performance coordinated image stabilisation (IS) system that integrates the camera’s in-body IS with IS systems on attached RF lenses. The camera will also feature dual media card slots and will support automatic transfer of image files from the device to the image.canon cloud platform.

Alongside the EOS R5, Canon is also developing a total of 9 RF lenses scheduled for release during 2020, including the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x.

Reference exhibits for the EOS R5 and RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, Extender RF 1.4x, and Extender RF 2x will be on display in the Canon booth at the CP+ Camera and Photo Imaging Show 2020, to be held from February 27 to March 1 at the Pacifico Yokohama convention hall in Yokohama, Japan.

Superior storytelling is made effortless with the Canon EOS M200. Its guided user interface is perfect for first-time camera shooters, with useful on-screen guidance as well as hints and tips on how to get the best results. The camera’s large APS-C sized 24.1 megapixel sensor produces highly detailed images that look sharp and striking, even when cropped or enlarged for sharing on social media

The camera features Canon-developed Dual Pixel CMOS AF that delivers professional-looking movies and images, by keeping moving subjects in sharp focus with a pleasing background blur. This feature is perfect for capturing pin-sharp memories at a party, festival, or concert with low-light AF sensitivity down to EV-4. The addition of Eye Detection AF also makes capturing the natural expressions of friends and family simple, by automatically maintaining focus on a subject’s eyes.

The introduction of Canon’s latest processor, DIG!C 8, delivers new functionality as well as great quality. With a maximum ISO speed of 100-25600 (extending to ISO 51200 equivalent), DIG!C 8 guards against image blur and reduces image noise when shooting in darker locations, such as a bar or music venue.

DIG!C 8 also adds a new dimension to storytelling, powering 4K movie for the highest level of movie clarity. The Canon EOS M200 takes the storytelling potential one step further with a 4K time-lapse feature and the ability to take 4K stills from 4K movies, perfect for capturing memories in detail.

The LCD touchscreen on the Canon EOS M200 flips 180 degrees, which, when paired with Canon’s M-Series of lenses, helps elevate selfies beyond what is achievable with a smartphone. The camera’s Self Portrait mode also allows settings such as background blur and brightness to be easily adjusted in real time. A first on an EOS camera, the movie record button is displayed on the touchscreen when in Movie Mode, ideally positioned for easy operation when recording a vlog with the screen tilted 180 degrees. Movies can even be recorded and played back on mobile in a vertical orientation, so they are optimised for sharing on social media after they are captured.

The Canon EOS M200 features an array of settings and tools empowering those stepping up from a smartphone to capture memories in artistic and imaginative ways. It includes Canon’s Creative Assist feature, a suite of effects, filters and colour adjustment tools to apply to photographs when composing an image or after it has been taken.
