New Vegas Pro 20

VEGAS Creative Software (www.vegascreativesoftware.com) announced today a significant leap forward for its flagship VEGAS Pro product line with the launch of VEGAS Pro 20. With this update, VEGAS Creative Software adds a number of new features to further strengthen advanced collaboration workflows. There are also a number of new features that enhance color grading workflow power and efficiencies directly on the timeline.

With the launch of VEGAS Pro 20, VEGAS Creative Software has added powerful new cloud features to its VEGAS Hub collaborative platform. The File Drop feature enables creators to upload files directly into VEGAS Hub from any connected mobile device or desktop system anywhere in the world. An editor simply invites a collaborator – another editor, cinematographer or anyone who has media to share on a project – to upload files into VEGAS Hub. From there, the editor imports them directly into a project through the VEGAS Hub Explorer window. VEGAS Pro 20 also adds Automatic Project Collections which pull all of a project’s assets together for instant organization. Content creators can quickly and easily access all media files from any of their projects, and also have the ability to instantly archive their projects.

VEGAS Pro 20 adds powerful new color correction features to the Color Grading panel that enable creators to produce stunning looks, fine-tune the color to match the emotion of their sequences, and gain full control of colors. Hue Adjustment color curves make it easy to isolate a specific color in a video and change it to a completely different color, while Temperature and Tint controls make it easy to achieve the perfect white balance. This development is the latest in a series of color workflow enhancements from the VEGAS Creative Software team, as they strive to make the color correction workflow as seamless as possible, saving editors significant time and tedium from having to constantly switch platforms in the middle of an edit.

VEGAS Pro 20: Advancing Audio Production

With deep roots and a breadth of experience in audio production technology, the VEGAS Creative Software development team is also strengthening what is already a compelling and sophisticated audio production feature set which has made VEGAS Pro the top choice of audio-centric content creators and musicians worldwide. With today’s announcement VEGAS Pro 20 adds support for the VST3 industry standard audio plug-in software interface that integrates software effects units into digital audio workstations. VST uses digital signal processing to simulate traditional recording studio hardware in software. This new feature will be in beta at launch and available to users for testing.

Jason Dunne is a professional musician, producer, remixer and DJ with an impressive resume in the music industry. In addition to being a professional sound engineer for the Florida Panthers, the Miami Marlins, and the Miami Dolphins, Jason has worked with many iconic artists such as Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Metallica, Billy Joel, and Elton John to name a few. When he is not touring, or streaming live on Twitch, Jason is an experienced Content Creator in the music community who relies on VEGAS Pro to edit his pre-recorded mixed compilation sets. Jason had this to say about the new release of VEGAS Pro 20:

“I’m really excited about VST3 implementation into VEGAS Pro 20 for more efficient processing… there’s so much more that I can do now with 3rd party VSTs than ever before!”

Constantly Improving the VEGAS Pro Experience

Also with the launch of VEGAS Pro 20, the team at VEGAS Creative Software is announcing a partnership with one of the industry’s most popular producers of visual effects elements and assets – Action VFX (www.actionvfx.com) – to offer VEGAS Pro 20 customers a free Starter subscription to its library of high-resolution, high-frame-rate VFX elements. Action VFX is industry renowned for their high-quality VFX elements, as well as for their extensive connection to the VFX community as well as their entertaining and educational VFX tutorials.

Additionally with this launch, VEGAS Creative Software is delivering a major update to its VEGAS Stream live streaming platform, which is included in the VEGAS Post and VEGAS Pro offerings. The new VEGAS Stream delivers a host of new features designed to further simplify the live streaming workflow and to better integrate with customers’ existing live streaming studio environments.

Released: Mercalli v6 for Windows

If you look at your friends with their GoPros with its natty inbuilt Hypersmoothing and are envious, there is hope. And in a lot of cases it is better.

ProDAD, which has made add on niche packages for years has just released Mercalli v6 for Windows. Now I have only just got a review version this very minute, but I have been using Mercalli for probably 15 years now with a number of projects / cameras, and I have to say it is superb.

So what does Mercalli do? Basically it takes rough footage and smooths it out by using some very clever algorithms, and now with added AI apparently.

You can get a download trial if you want to have a play yourself.

Back in 2018 I asked expert Chris Oaten to review the Mac version of Mercalli v5, so while I check out what they have added and what is improved etc, you might like to have a read of Chris’ review. He even has a before and after video.

Hedge Extends Avid Editing Workflows into the Cloud

Postlab support for Media Composer unlocks the cloud for Avid editors; features collaborative remote editing with familiar Bin Locking capabilities and flexible pay-as-you-go pricing model

Hedge, the creator of modern, intelligent software for video professionals, today officially released Postlab full support for Media Composer, a cloud-native solution to enable collaborative remote editing workflows for Avid editors. Postlab serves as an extension to an on-premise Nexis or other Avid-compatible NAS/SAN storage. Eliminating cumbersome access gateways and high latency associated with cloud-media workflows, Postlab for Media Composer provides a great user experience, regardless of available bandwidth. A flexible pricing model lets post facilities and media businesses use the Postlab platform without upfront commitment, and scale and shrink team sizes when needed.

Media companies need a way to collaborate remotely right now. Given the uncertainty around the pandemic, many do not want to make significant investments or sweeping infrastructure changes,” states Paul Matthijs, co-founder and CEO of Hedge. “Postlab for Media Composer extends facilities’ on-premise storage investment by providing much-needed secure remote editing for a small incremental cost. It’s fast, secure remote editing that delivers the same great experience of being in the facility.”

Postlab for Media Composer is intrinsically secure and doesn’t rely on slow and hard-to-configure VPNs, allowing editors to begin working immediately from anywhere, with no minimum requirement for an internet connection. Postlab keeps existing workspaces in sync and makes Avid’s incredibly useful Bin Locking feature work in the cloud so users can seamlessly collaborate on projects without overwriting each other’s work, a crucial component of any workflow, on-premise or in the cloud.

Postlab for Media Composer is an Avid Nexis in the cloud with the benefits of a local station,” states Rich Camp, assistant editor at Jax Media, a production company that has worked on shows like “Russian Doll,” “Search Party,” and “Emily in Paris.” “Someone in Los Angeles can work on a show with someone in New York seamlessly. On a recent production, we were working in bins back and forth across the Atlantic, in real-time. It’s a great workflow.”

Postlab for Media Composer brings the best of the cloud with none of the drawbacks:

  • Immediate onboarding – Postlab has no middleware, storage restrictions or other limiting factors. It’s a seamless transition from on-premise to cloud, with essential features and characteristics of your Nexis (or Avid compatible NAS/SAN) workflow intact.
  • Edit Even on Lightweight Connection – Postlab works with both fast and slow connections and where bandwidth is insufficient for real-time cloud operation, media files are prefetched and intelligently cached, so they’re available for immediate editing. Postlab’s Workspace feature also allows editors to cache a complete folder and its content locally, so only metadata and lock files require syncing, which is instantaneous.
  • Familiar Workspace and Collaboration – Postlab for Media Composer extends Nexis and traditional Avid NAS/SAN storage workflows into the cloud, providing editors a familiar workspace, and capabilities like Bin Locking ensure that editors can collaborate without overwriting important work – just as they’re used to.
  • Low Cloud Costs – Moving media files in and out of the cloud is often time-consuming and costly due to egress fees. Postlab for Media Composer cuts the costs along with the complexity of using the cloud through metadata and a “zero egress” policy; no hidden costs related to cloud storage – a rarity in a world dominated by Azure and AWS.
  • Scalable, Without Vendor Lock-In – Pay-as-you-go based model allows facilities to pay a basic monthly fee and then add additional Postlab users for as little as one day, increasing or decreasing both storage and users on an as-needed basis – essential for facilities working on dynamic productions and employing varying numbers of freelancers.

Postlab for Media Composer works for all Avid Media Composer Ultimate editors, whether they’re working on-premise or from home, and supports all types of storage—an on-prem Nexis system, NAS or SAN—or no on-prem storage at all. Hedge’s 15-day fully functional trial lets facilities put Postlab for Media Composer to the test with zero upfront commitment.

Seamless Extension to Avid Nexis

Moving to Postlab is an easy step for facilities with an Avid Nexis, with no training required and no change to the existing workflow. Media Composer editors will see their familiar workspaces and workflows, with the added benefit of being able to work anywhere.

Support for Avid-Compatible NAS/SAN Shared Storage

Avid Bin Locking is what allows editors to collaborate using shared storage. This is built natively into Postlab and works alongside Avid-compatible local shared storage whether it’s a NAS or SAN.

No NAS or SAN?

Media Composer Ultimate customers who do not have a centralized NAS/SAN storage solution can fully leverage Drive, Postlab’s shared storage in the cloud. An integral part of the Postlab platform, Drive allows for editing straight from the cloud without requiring to download all media first. Drive scales with a team’s needs, ensuring you never pay for storage that’s being used.

New Adobe Releases from its “MAX” Conference

There is a whole pile of stuff coming from the annual Adobe-Fest known as MAX.

I’ll attempt to bring the main things of interest as soon as I can. Here is the first, which for many, is probably the most relevent at this stage.

Through the latest updates to Creative Cloud flagship apps—powered by Adobe Sensei AI technology—Adobe defines the future of creativity through continuous innovation. Major releases at MAX include:

  • Photoshop : Three AI-powered Neural Filters in Photoshop desktop and Camera Raw file support on the iPad.
  • Lightroom/Lightroom Classic : More powerful and precise ML-powered masking capabilities, recommended presets and Community Remixing.
  • Premiere Pro : Enhanced Speech-to-Text capabilities and a Sensei-powered beta Remix feature.
  • After Effects : Faster Previews and Renders with Multi-Frame Rendering and beta Sensei-powered Scene Edit Detection capabilities.
  • Illustrator : Improved 3D effects and access to Substance 3D materials on desktop and a Sensei-powered Vectorize Technology Preview on iPad.

  • Fresco : Turn any drawing layer into an animation layer to create motion, draw with new perspective guides and grids, and use non-destructive adjustment layers to explore and enhance colors.

Enabling Connected Creativity

At MAX, the company previewed the future of creativity on the web, which is designed to help creative teams collaborate in real time, across multiple surfaces and stakeholders, regardless of device or location.

  • Frame.io : The recent acquisition of Frame.io combines Adobe’s industry-leading creative video editing software, Premiere Pro and After Effects, with Frame.io’s review and approval functionality to deliver a powerful collaboration platform that will radically accelerate the creative process. Frame.io’s cloud-native platform is a secure and elegant way to gather feedback from everyone involved in the video production process and will enable every stakeholder to effectively contribute to the creative process.
  • Photoshop (Beta) and Illustrator (Private Beta) on the web : Browser-based experiences where millions of individuals, teams and stakeholders can view, share and comment on cloud documents on the web. Collaborators with a Photoshop subscription can make quick edits and retouch/adjust images, while Illustrator subscribers can access essential design tools and editing workflows using a set of early features.
  • Creative Cloud Spaces (Private Beta) : A digital space built to fuel collaboration among teams, Creative Cloud Spaces simplifies decision-making by putting everything they need in one place. This includes project files, libraries and external links so everyone on the team has universal access to drive creative projects from start to finish. Spaces will be accessible across desktop and mobile through Creative Cloud Web and available in Photoshop, Illustrator, Fresco and XD.
  • Creative Cloud Canvas (Private Beta) : To unlock a new level of collaboration, Canvases enable teams to lay out, visualize and review creative work together, in real time, without ever leaving the browser. On a Canvas, teams can place shapes, text, images and stickers, as well as linked documents from Creative Cloud apps, so anyone can make quick edits to the original creative in the corresponding app with a single click.

In addition, an all-new Workfront plugin for Photoshop gives creatives the ability to collaborate in context. Through an embedded Workfront update screen in Photoshop, creators can see tasks and issues, and post and view comments related to the project they’re working on.

It completely transforms workflows and unlocks some incredible creative potential. What’s exciting is simply by downloading this free DaVinci Resolve update customers will get all these features for free,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “To have the capability now to easily edit and color grade Blackmagic RAW 8K footage in HDR and all on a laptop while you’re miles away from the studio is incredible.
