My RØDE Reel 2018 Wraps: Major Winners Announced

Australian pro audio giant RØDE Microphoneshas wrapped the major section of the 2018 season of My RØDE Reel, the World’s Largest Short Film Competition.

In the competition’s fifth year, My RØDE Reel received a total of 3622 films (each of the 1811 entrants supplied an entry film and a behind-the-scenes film) from 91 countries. (The new ‘Master Your Craft’ category – offering emerging content creators a year-long job at RØDE – is open for entries until September 15, 2018, so that number will rise.) It is the biggest year for the fifth year in a row.

A world-record $1-Million Prize Pool offered prizes across 30 categories, including genre and technical awards. The premier award is the Judges’ Film Prize, as judged by this year’s panel of filmmaking professionals.

Fishy Wish by the Polish filmmaker, Przemysław Stański. A well-crafted dark comedy about two neighbours warring over a talking goldfish that grants wishes, Fishy Wish was the highest scoring film among the four judges.

Acclaimed score and music mixer Kirsty Whalley (Avengers: Infinity War, The Shape Of Water et al.) said that Fishy Wish was, “A brilliant, compact, inventive fable. Fishy Wish is technically accomplished, looks great and is absolutely a proper complete film from opening titles to closing credits.”

Fellow MRR18 judge, Australian director and documentary filmmaker Clara Chong agreed, saying that Fishy Wish was “The standout winner – funny, unexpected, dark, a complete story with character arc, drama, and a hell of a finish.”

The other major prize winners in My RØDE Reel 2018 were:

People’s Choice: The Knight, by writer-director Delia Chimbo (Ecuador)

Best Female Filmmaker: Gems, by writer-director Kyndra Kennedy (USA)
