Blackmagic Design Announces New HyperDeck Shuttle HD
New desktop based HyperDeck recorder/player designed as the perfect clip player, includes support for H.264, Apple ProRes and DNx video formats.

Blackmagic Design today announced HyperDeck Shuttle HD, a new recorder/player that’s designed for use on the desktop as an on demand media player. This new model supports recording and playback for ProRes, DNx and H.264 files as well as PCM or AAC audio. The unique design is dominated by a large metal search dial and traditional broadcast deck controls, so it’s easy to quickly scroll through media. It even has a built in teleprompter! HyperDeck Shuttle uses HDMI connections so it’s the perfect solution for use with ATEM Mini switchers.

HyperDeck Shuttle HD is a recorder and player that’s designed to be used on the desktop. That means it’s more than a master recorder as it can also be used as a clip player. The large search dial is perfect for scrolling through lots of media to find the clip customers want to play. Customers get support for ProRes, DNx and H.264 files in NTSC, PAL, 720p and 1080p video formats. The HDMI connections allow connection to switchers, cameras and monitors. Plus SD cards, UHS-II cards and USB-C external disks can be used for recording and playing media. HyperDeck Shuttle HD uses the same design as ATEM Mini Extreme, so it’s a perfect combination to use as a media player. It even has a built in teleprompter.

HyperDeck Shuttle HD is perfectly designed for the desktop. This means the front panel can be operated with a single hand. The gentle angle allows their hand to rest on the search dial, and the control buttons are positioned under their fingertips. The design is the same depth and angle as ATEM Mini Extreme, so they match perfectly when used together. That’s perfect when users are searching through lots of media. Plus, the buttons are the same design as traditional broadcast decks. The rear panel includes all video, power, network and control connections.

With support for H.264, ProRes and DNx files, customers can record true broadcast masters. Customers can even select between PCM or AAC audio. That’s perfect for higher quality mastering when used with ATEM Mini switchers. Customers get everything needed to send shows to broadcasters and for uploading to YouTube.

The large search dial lets customers visually browse their clip library. Then customers can use the previous clip button to cue to the start of the clip. After playing, customers can use the clip button to stop the playback at the end of the clip. ATEM switchers can even remote control HyperDeck Shuttle via Ethernet.

HyperDeck Shuttle includes a control panel that’s very fast to use. The buttons are similar to a traditional broadcast deck. Simply press the record button and customers instantly start recording the video input to a file. It will record in the file format that has been set in the record menu. There are other buttons for playback, to cue to the start of the clip and to move to the next clip. The buttons have been custom designed by Blackmagic Design for the highest quality. The large machined metal search dial supports shuttle, jog and scroll so customers can find clips fast. Plus all deck control functions can be triggered remotely using the Ethernet network.

HyperDeck Shuttle supports recording to common SD cards and UHS-II cards so customers don’t need expensive custom media. Plus, customers can even record to external USB disks. When using USB disks, if customers use a USB hub, or Blackmagic MultiDock, customers can even record on multiple disks for non stop recording. This means customers can record up to 157 hours of H.264 in 1080p59.94 on a 1 TB card. That’s over 6 days of recording in HD using a single 1 TB card.

If recording to other types of media is required, the USB-C expansion port lets customers plug in an external flash disk for recording. Plus, it’s even possible to record to a disk array users will use for editing, so customers don’t need to waste time copying files before starting post production. Just move the disk over to a computer and instantly start editing. Customers can even add a Blackmagic MultiDock 10G that has 4 separate SSD media slots, so customers can add compatibility with SSD media to the HyperDeck Shuttle.

HyperDeck Shuttle HD supports the most popular codecs in use today. Customers get broadcast quality DNx and ProRes file formats. However customers also get space saving H.264 when recording in NTSC, PAL, 720p, 1080p plus even true 1080i interlaced formats. That means customers get tight 60:1 to 285:1 compression ratios for very small files at full broadcast quality. Plus customers can choose uncompressed PCM audio, or even AAC audio when uploading files to YouTube. HyperDeck Shuttle HD supports both ExFAT used on Windows and HFS+ used on Mac disk formatting standards, so disks can be mounted and read on both platforms. Customers also get support for recording long duration events into a single video file.

For such a small design, HyperDeck Shuttle has powerful connections. The HDMI input can be connected to cameras and switchers such as ATEM Mini, and the HDMI output can be connected to monitors for presentations or ATEM Mini switchers as a long form media player. Imagine playing commercials, promos or music videos into ATEM Mini switchers from HyperDeck Shuttle. The rear panel also includes a 12V DC power input and a power supply is included. The 1G Ethernet connection allows control and remote file uploads. The USB-C expansion port can be used to record to large external disks, for software updates or as a webcam output. The SD card slot supports both SD cards and UHS-II cards.

With built in HDMI input and output, customers can connect to consumer cameras, monitors, televisions, video projectors and even ATEM Mini switchers. SD formats include NTSC and PAL. 720p HD standards include 720p50 and 720p59.94. 1080i HD interlaced formats include 1080i50 and 1080i59.94. 1080p HD formats include 1080p23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 and 60p. HyperDeck Shuttle can even support 1080 PsF formats.

With such a large search dial, HyperDeck Shuttle HD can be used as a teleprompter. Simply change to teleprompter in the record menu and it will read standard RTF text files as scripts. Customers don’t need weird custom software as scripts can be written in simple text editors such as TextEdit. Customers can move between multiple scripts with the previous and next clip buttons. If customers press both jog and scroll buttons, customers can live scroll the script like a traditional teleprompter. Even the size, color, font weight and alignment will be read from the RTF script file. Best of all, customers can write their scripts in standard 12 point size and HyperDeck will scale them up for the prompter display automatically.

HyperDeck Shuttle allows media files to be uploaded remotely, using simple FTP client software. With 1G Ethernet built into the HyperDeck Shuttle, file transfers are very fast, and sometimes faster than the SD card media disk. For remote deck control, all models use an easy to learn text based protocol, so customers can use a simple terminal app like Telnet to test control commands.

Blackmagic Design today announced HyperDeck Extreme 4K HDR, a new broadcast deck with advanced H.265 4K recording featuring a touch screen user interface with built in scopes and HDR screen. HyperDeck Extreme features the trusted reliability of HyperDeck combined with new innovations such as space saving H.265 files, optional internal cache, 3D LUTs and HDR support. With the ability to record up to 4K in H.265, customers get reduced storage costs and amazing image quality. CFast media support allows customers to record to commonly available flash memory cards. The H.265 files are small enough to allow long recordings on standard CFast cards. Sometimes their media can fill before customers change to a blank card, or if the card is too slow, then customers can get dropped frames in their recording. To eliminate this problem, customers can install a PCIe flash disk into HyperDeck Extreme to use as a record cache. This eliminates problems with CFast media or external disks, as the cache will automatically take over and record any content the media could not capture. Even if a card fills, recording will continue to the cache until it’s swapped.

Customers will be ready for the latest HDR workflows with support for the latest HDR standards and an extremely bright screen with a wide color gamut. The built in scopes even change to HDR scopes when working in HDR formats. The bright LCD has a wider color gamut so can handle both Rec. 2020 and Rec. 709 colorspaces. The built in HyperDeck Extreme HDR LCD color gamut can even handle 100% of the DCI-P3 format.

HyperDeck Extreme features full internal waveform monitoring so customers can ensure compliance to broadcast standards when used on high end work. The waveform display provides a traditional luminance (brightness) levels view of their input or playback signal. The vectorscope display allows customers to see the intensity of color at 100% SDI reference levels. Customers also get RGB and YUV parade displays which are ideal for color correction and checking for illegal levels. Histogram shows the distribution of white to black detail in their images and highlights or shadows clipping.

H.265 files are extremely small and range from 60:1 to 285:1 compression ratios which means much lower file sizes. Plus H.265 is now supported on all major operating systems. HyperDeck Extreme even supports Apple ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 422, ProRes 422 LT for recording and playback plus ProRes 4444 for playback to fill and key out. This means files will be compatible with software such as DaVinci Resolve, Media Composer, Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro X.

With 10G Ethernet, HyperDeck Extreme is perfect for digital signage because remote uploads are extremely fast. It uses an easy text based protocol plus customers can use Telnet to test control commands. To upload media files remotely, customers can use FTP, or even use simple FTP client software. When the ethernet protocol and FTP is used with large USB-C disk arrays, HyperDeck Extreme becomes a great broadcast server for ingest, media management and play out.

The internal memory core has been designed to saturate all four 10G Ethernet ports to their theoretical maximum speed, all at the same time. At maximum speed, the Blackmagic Cloud Store is extremely quiet with very little cooling fan noise. Even when editing large 12K digital film RAW files. It’s so fast, multicam editing is incredibly smooth, even if it’s used with massive digital film camera files.

Now customers can setup a local cache of their Dropbox files. This makes working much faster because files are instantly available without needing to be loaded from the internet. Blackmagic Cloud Store will constantly work to stay in sync. Plus customers can also save space on their computer by moving cached Dropbox files to the Blackmagic Cloud Store so they are accessible to everyone on their local network. Customers can even sync multiple Blackmagic Cloud Stores via Dropbox so people in different geographic locations can collaborate without latency because everyone has a local copy of the files. Dropbox is also a fantastic backup solution.

The most exciting feature is the HDMI monitoring output. Simply connect a TV or monitor to see live status of the Blackmagic Cloud Store. The storage map shows a graphic representation of the memory core and where the read and write access is happening for the connected users. There are also four graphs that show customers the data transfers on the four main 10G Ethernet connections. The main space indicator shows customers the capacity of the memory core and how much is currently used. The status for each Dropbox connection is also shown. It’s even possible to see connected users and the power supply status.

The Blackmagic Cloud Store has four high speed 10G Ethernet ports, which are only found on expensive workstation computers. The Blackmagic Cloud Store is so fast, it will run each 10G Ethernet port to its maximum capacity. With a built in Ethernet switch, each port can be plugged into a separate computer, or they can be used together for 40G Ethernet. Two extra 1G Ethernet ports let customers keep the 10G Ethernet ports free for faster computers.

Modern laptop computers are so thin, they often don’t even have an Ethernet connection. Blackmagic Cloud Store has a USB-C to Ethernet adapter built in and customers can access it simply by plugging their computer into the USB-C port on the store. That means customers can just plug in to quickly grab files when customers need them urgently.

The two USB-C ports on the Blackmagic Cloud Store can be used for loading and backup of files. If customers connect a media card reader or a USB-C disk to the ingest port, then all files on that disk will be loaded into the cloud store. Backup is also important and while Dropbox is a good backup solution, by connecting a USB disk to the backup port, customers can do local backups without any ongoing costs and with total privacy. It works with a USB-C disk, or even large USB-C disk arrays.

One of the big advantages of Blackmagic Cloud Store is that it’s private storage that customers fully control. There are no subscriptions to sign up for. There are no monthly license fees. There is no tracking of their usage or data. That means customers can run a private network, totally disconnected from the internet. This is critical for many security standards where computer networks cannot be connected to the external internet. With Blackmagic Cloud Store, customers get enterprise level performance, but with total freedom.

When customers need to change settings, customers can use the Blackmagic Cloud Store utility that’s available on Mac and Windows. The utility also lets customers add Dropbox sync folders.

Blackmagic Design Announces DaVinci Resolve 18

Major update adds Blackmagic Cloud support for remote collaboration, DaVinci proxy workflow, new AI based Resolve FX, improved subtitling, Fairlight Fixed to FlexBus and more!

Blackmagic Design today announced DaVinci Resolve 18, a major new cloud collaboration update which allows multiple editors, colorists, VFX artists and audio engineers to work simultaneously on the same project, on the same timeline, anywhere in the world. DaVinci Resolve 18 supports the Blackmagic Cloud for hosting and sharing projects, as well as a new DaVinci proxy workflow. This update also includes new Resolve FX AI tools powered by the DaVinci Neural Engine, as well as time saving tools for editors, Fairlight legacy fixed bus to FlexBus conversion, GPU accelerated paint in Fusion, and more!

DaVinci Resolve 18 public beta is available for download now from the Blackmagic Design web site.

DaVinci Resolve 18 is a major release featuring cloud based workflows for a new way to collaborate remotely. Customers can host project libraries using Blackmagic Cloud and collaborate on the same timeline, in real time, with multiple users globally. The new Blackmagic Proxy generator automatically creates proxies linked to camera originals, for a faster editing workflow. There are new Resolve FX such as ultra beauty and 3D depth map, improved subtitling for editors, GPU accelerated Fusion paint and real time title template playback, Fairlight fixed to FlexBus conversion and more.

DaVinci Resolve 18 supports Blackmagic Cloud, so customers can host their project libraries on the DaVinci Resolve Project Server in the cloud. Share projects and work collaboratively with editors, colorists, VFX artists and audio engineers on the same project at the same time, anywhere in the world.

The new Blackmagic Proxy Generator App automatically creates and manages proxies from camera originals. Create a watch folder and new media is automatically converted into H.264, H.265 or Apple ProRes proxies to accelerate editing workflows. Customers can extract proxies into a separate folder for offline work.

Customers can switch between camera original footage and proxies in a single click. With Blackmagic Proxy Generated proxies, DaVinci Resolve knows where in the file tree to find them, instantly linking to the camera originals in the media pool. Edit with proxies, then relink to camera originals to grade.

DaVinci Resolve 18 adds intelligent media location management, so that when customers are collaborating customers can quickly link media to their unique file paths. Now customers don’t need to manually relink or search for assets when customers work remotely.

The collaboration update also provides major performance enhancements if customers are using a secure private network. Get immediate updates of editorial and color changes when collaborating on a remotely hosted project library. Now creative decisions can be made in real time based on the latest changes.

Live stream their DaVinci Resolve Studio viewer and display on a remote computer monitor, or a reference grading monitor, via DeckLink to anywhere in the world. The low latency, high quality 12-bit image is ideal for remote editing or color grading giving customers instant feedback on changes.

DaVinci Resolve 18 features incredible new tools for colorists. Located in the magic mask palette, the new object mask is able to recognize and track the movement of thousands of unique objects. The DaVinci Neural Engine intuitively isolates animals, vehicles, people and food, plus countless other elements for advanced secondary grading and effects application.

The new depth map effect lets customers instantly generate a 3D depth matte of a scene to quickly grade the foreground separately from the background, and vice versa. Customers can bring attention to action in the foreground, help interview subjects stand out, or add atmosphere in the background of a scene.

Apply graphics to surfaces that warp or change perspective in dramatic ways, like t-shirts, flags, or even the side of a face with the surface tracker. It’s customizable mesh follows the motion of a textured surface. Apply graphics, composite tattoos, or even cover up logos with this powerful tracking tool.

Ultra beauty gives customers advanced control over a subject when performing corrective beauty work. Developed with professional colorists, the ultra beauty tool helps to address general imperfections by smoothing skin and then recovering detail to produce natural and complimentary results to the subject.

Subtitle support has been expanded to include TTML and XML timed texts and embedded MXF/IMF subtitles. View and import subtitles from media storage, create regions to support multiple simultaneous captions per track, and set individual presets and text positions when indicating different speakers.

Transitions in the effects library’s shape, iris and wipe categories now have a checkbox, allowing customers to easily reverse the direction of the transition. This gives customers additional flexibility when using these types of transitions, as well as adding to their creative possibilities.

A new 5×5 option in the multicam viewer now allows customers to view up to 25 different angles in a single multicam clip at the same time. Ideal for large multicam projects, this makes viewing, cutting and switching between more angles much easier, rather than moving between pages to see different angles.

In DaVinci Resolve 18, GPU acceleration allows paint brush strokes to be generated and displayed in real time, for a more intuitive approach when performing cover up work or graphic design. Instant visual feedback allows customers to assess their work and make corrections in any stroke style or shape.

Text, text+ and shape templates have improved speed and playback performance in DaVinci Resolve 18. New memory management and data handling means that Fusion templates are up to 200% faster. Customers can see accelerated results in the viewer and put together motion graphic compositions faster than ever.

FlexBus is Fairlight’s flexible audio busing and routing system designed for managing high track counts, extensive plug-in processing, perfect synchronization and multiple project deliverables. Now customers can effortlessly convert legacy fixed bus Fairlight projects to FlexBus with a single click.

The Dolby Atmos deliverable toolset has been expanded to support rendering of a binaural output from a complex Dolby Atmos mix. Now a Dolby 7.1.4 mix can be rendered to playback in a pair of headphones while maintaining the immersive sound experience from just two audio channels.

New options in the decompose menu enhance collaboration allowing editors to compile their work to a single timeline. Nested timelines can now be decomposed with all track data including FX and automation. Assignments will connect using new busses, existing paths or new tracks can be left unpatched.

DaVinci Resolve supports the latest industry standard audio formats natively, including immersive audio formats like Dolby Atmos, Auro 3D, MPEG-H, NHK 22.2, and SMPTE. The space view scope displays a real time view of every object and its relationship to the room and other objects in 3D space.
