When Sony dumped the Vegas Pro application and MAGIX took it over, there were grand plans that Sony would release its own home grown suite of professional video editing apps.
Some half baked apps did appear, but nothing much further seemed to eventuate, and whilst I still have them installed on an older computer, I pretty much forgot all about the concept and just continued using Vegas Pro from its new owners.
Today though, I received a press release telling me that Sony Catalyst Browse has been announced in version 2020.1, and it is a program that is “free of cost, that allows users to browse and manage XAVC S and XAVC HS video clips shot on Sony cameras”.
Also released is “Catalyst Prepare Version 2020.1”, which, for a fee, offers simple timeline editing in addition to the “Catalyst Browse” features.
From these versions, a fast, accurate image stabilisation function, using metadata generated by the camera’s built-in gyro, is available on Alpha 7S III, Alpha 7C, RX0 II, RX100 VII and ZV-1. Operating systems are OS Windows 10 and macOS 10.13, 10.14, 10.15.
The new desktop applications are available to download from here: https://www.sony.net/disoft/
